Root Canals
The term ‘root canal’ refers to the natural cavity within the centre of a tooth. Soft tissue known as pulp, which contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, is located within the root canal and is crucial to a tooth’s development. However, a tooth can survive without pulp once it’s mature, as surrounding tissues are able to provide nourishment.
If a tooth is severely inflamed or infected, a root canal procedure may be required to repair and save the tooth. The first step in this procedure is the removal of pulp from inside the tooth. Then, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and filled. Finally, a dental restoration, such as a crown, is placed on top of the tooth to protect it from future damage.
At Design Dentistry, our root canal treatments are performed using a local anesthetic, meaning you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.
